discuss: are characters built around the traits of their b'day/star sign/blood type?

um yay for search bar web address because i just had a total fucking blank on the name of dreamwidth. i figured the brain would twig if I just typed in a letter and see what came up. all i really remembered was that i use my left hand to search for it.

yeah my brain is kinda screwed up. shoulders are all tense and tight and i'm waiting for the painkillers to kick in. listening to the suikoden v soundtrack was helping until i got to a heap of the battle tunes. was unwinding nicely and now i'm feeling tight again. maybe i should skip them but i'm typing here.

i've wanted for the past couple hours to think at the interwebs. sounds wrong for wanting to make a post, thinking at the net, but i could do that if i did a voice post. it'd likely just come out as this slurry babble because i'm not firing in all cylinders at the moment. body is too kaput to enjoy my evening. i think i'll be in bed before long and it's only just after 6pm.

awesome sounding storm going past right now. i'll upload stupid vid of me playing with shadow at some point. if youtube will bloody let me seeing as my net is slower than i am right now and that's saying it.

oh and i mean a vid of me being stupid while playing with the cat. brain no function for proper sentences at all.

urgh so slow. and damn dad watching some lame segall action flick with the sound up. hence me having my headphone on but it doesn't make much difference. if sound cancelling ones weren't so expensive i'd get some. they have to be pink space invaders ones too though cos that's what i'm wearing righ tnow.

so back to the original reason for the post...at work we have a book thing where a guy comes in and for a couple weeks he leaves a sample of books to browse through and buy. there's this one book, 'the birthday oracle' that we've all been passing about for a read. it's kinda scary how accurate the first few sentences are. i'm grabbing a copy seeing as it's only $8. will certainly share for those who might be interested in finding out what it reckons your date of birth says about you. i'm a little peeved about what it says for me relationship wise but that's because what is says is more true than not *shrugs*

anyways...

it got me to thinking - how do game characters get their birthdays chosen? are they drawn out of a hat? do creators do piles of research after creating the character to find a suitable star sign for the personality they've been given? cos they give they birthdays and star signs and even blood types...are those characters then really like what ever is said about that combination of things? discuss.

you all can totally see what i'm going to do to this book. it's going to have stick-it notes in it with characters names and dates on them XDDD

hopefully i'll stay coherent enough for a bit of a discussion on it. i'm going to try and answer some emails now. do excuse typos because there's a good chance some of them will be written with my eyes closed >.>

If we're talking fictional characters, I'd say it depends. I do know that Japanese creators are extremely big on blood type = character, as well as birthday (star sign I haven't seen that often, but they usually offer a birthday or birth year that corresponds with specific character traits like hot-headedness, frugality, etc.

Of course, the whole thing can get extremely fuzzy when the creators themselves then forget a character's character and/or necessary qualities. For instance, one of my favorite characters' blood type is AB, which in Japan is the most loathed of all blood types because it supposedly combines contrary traits, but the character himself really behaves almost nothing like what is supposedly associated with his blood type (or, in fact, his zodiac sign). Then again, the official profile given out for him paints him as the exact opposite of how he's canonically portrayed, so... I dunno. I'm taking profiles of that kind with a grain of salt.

I'm with aphelion_orion. I think the characters used to be big on blood types with a birth date thrown in. But, there might be something more to birth dates and blood types that we don't know of. It might be sort of like the chinese where it's year of *insert animal* and then down to your birth hour of *insert another animal*

And every animal has a elemental quality given to it. for myself, I am an Earth Horse because of my birth year. I have yet to find out my Hour animal. I think i'm 2:30-ish pm. I'm actually 1:15pm.
This would make my hour animal a sheep. I'm not sure if the elements come into play for the hours as well...

I know for some of the FFVIII bunch, their zodiac signs have moments of seeming to be spot on with them and then other times, not so much.
