Book of Love: Voucher 39

There was a content quirk to Irvine’s lips at the way Squall snuggled under his arm as they stepped through the door of Ma Dincht’s house, heading outside for a bit of fresh air after a wonderful meal. It was a lightly cool evening, the sea breeze giving the air a salty tang to it.

“You’re a sneaky one, love,” Irvine chuckled once they were away from the house and strolling towards the waterfront.

“What makes you say that?”

“Well, us being here. I was expecting to get dragged to Esthar again or even stuck in Garden having dinner with Cid for today’s voucher. You’ve surprised me with this one. I thought you weren’t going to use the vouchers on Seifer and Zell anymore.”

Taking Squall’s silence as non-denial, Irvine smiled and placed a kiss on top of wind tousled brown hair and thought about how they’d ended up having dinner in Balamb.

Squall had given him the latest voucher at lunch, in front of everyone while in the office. Selphie had managed to get the whole group together, claming that she would buy lunch for them all. It almost turned into an impromptu Valentines preparation meeting until Squall had retrieved the book from his desk and torn out a page.

“We won’t have time to go to Esthar for this,” he’d told his lover as Squall sat down next to him.

“I know,” Squall had agreed, sipping his drink and staring at Zell and Seifer who sat across from them.

“You thinking of having dinner with Cid?” Selphie asked, coming up behind the sofa and snatching the voucher out of Irvine’s hand. “Love Voucher: Take out to In-laws’,” the petite woman read out loud. “That’s the only other person that really fits. Unless you’re having dinner with us?”

“No, was thinking of going to Balamb.”

Zell looked up at that from where he’d been playing with Seifer’s fingers, looking slightly embarrassed at everyone staring at them. “Balamb? Sure, we can do that. I’ll make the call.”

Irvine had been sure he and Seifer wore matching confused looks as Zell used their Commander’s phone to call Ma, telling her they’d be home for dinner.

“There’s something I don’t understand, Squall,” Irvine said, dragging his mind back to the present and trying not to think of Selphie’s gleeful look when the four men caught the train at Timber. He didn‘t even want to contemplate what she might get up to in their absence. “Zell agreed pretty quickly. How come he knows what is going on and I don’t?”

“Seifer doesn’t either although he might by now,” Squall said with a small smile as they stopped near the end of the pier.

Irvine relaxed back against one of the railings and pulled Squall to him.

“You gonna share this secret with me?”

“It’s not really a secret. I was unofficially adopted,” Squall shrugged.

“Say what? How does that work?”

“Not long after Zell arrived at Garden, I saved him from a pair of rather pissed off Grats who had been in the middle of a mating dance when he’d stumbled upon them by accident. He made me his blood-brother.” Squall held up his hand, bare as his gloves had been left back at Ma’s and showed Irvine his little finger. “You’ll find Zell has a similar cut.”

Taking the hand, Irvine ran his thumb over it, feeling the wrinkle of a scar along one side towards the tip.

“Plus,” Squall continued on, “Ma is listed as next of kin for most of us. She gets told if anything happens, same as Matron and Laguna.”

“What? How come I’m only learning this now?”

“You’ve never asked before and it has never come up in conversation,” Squall said, turning around and resting his head against Irvine’s chest.

“Oh…okay. Is there anything else I should know? Like what makes Ma so special that she’s gets to know everything?” Irvine asked, trying not to sound put out as Squall looked up at him and smirked as fingers brushed over his lips.

“You’re pouting,” Squall said and Irvine could feel his body shake with silent laughter.

“Am not.”

“You are so don’t deny it. If you must know…Ma is an old school friend of Matron’s. They’ve always been close.”

“That’s it?” Irvine asked, linking down at Squall. “It’s too simple.”

“Were you expecting some huge conspiracy where Ma was an exiled ex-Headmaster of Garden? “

Irvine laughed. “Now you’re just being silly.”

Squall just shrugged and pressed his lips to Irvine’s.

“We should get back,” Squall said and all Irvine wanted to do was hold him close for a proper kiss.

“You are such a tease.”

“Pfft like you’re one to talk,” Squalls aid as he pulled away, linking his arm through Irvine’s and lacing their fingers together. “Seifer and Zell should be finished cleaning up the kitchen by now.”

“See, you are a sneak,” Irvine announced, bumping his shoulder to Squall’s as they walked back to Ma‘s house. “Well done on getting us out of doing work.”

Squall’s chuckle was slightly breathy as Irvine spun him around and pressed him up against the side of a random building, Irvine’s ever present duster shielding their bodies from view of what was going on. Irvine echoed the soft moan that came from his lover, lips against Squall’s throat and thigh sliding between his legs.

“Unhand that man, dessert is getting cold.”

“Shove off Seifer, this is my dessert.”

“Ma told us to come find you,” Zell said, voice apologetic. “Dessert is cooked and if we’re to get back to Garden tonight, we can’t be late for our train.”

“Fine,” Irivne half growled, pulling away from Squall and wrapping an arm about his waist as they faced the two blonds. “What’s in the bag?”

“Oh…just a couple of things from the drugstore,” Seifer said, actually blushing in the dull streetlights.

“Toothbrush?” Irvine frowned at Squall’s strange question.

“Love, you don’t go to the store for just a toothbrush. You go for other things,” Irvine purred and nuzzled Squall’s ear.

“Actually,” Seifer blushed harder, “you’ve got one too.”

“Huh?” Irvine said, accepting the offered bag, looking inside and seeing it was the only thing in there now that Seifer held his own.

“You’ve just been adopted,” Squall chuckled beside him. “Come on, you can put it next to mine in the bathroom.”

Irvine let Squall drag him back to Ma’s house, Seifer and Zell not far behind and laughing at his confused look.

“You have a toothbrush at Ma’s?”

Am really really sure I already posted this but I can't find it.

I don't think you have, since I don't remember reading the toothbrush thing before... and anyway, great to see you getting back in the groove for BoL!

It'd be nice to have the series finished before tackling nano. I'm going to put some music on and get to writing the next one <3

I don't remember reading this one before and I always look forward to your BoL posts. ;) Yay for almost being done. I have writing that's years old that I really need to finish myself. But these are always a pleasure to read and I will miss them when you're finished.
