Book of Love: Voucher 41

‘Hi, this is Laguna…or well his voice anyways. Yes, it is my voice. This is Laguna’s message service for Laguna’s phone so you’ll have to talk to me, err it, because I’m busy right now.’

Squall sighed and hung up his phone, not bothering to leave a message. He’d left a couple already.

Three hours late. How much longer should I wait before I send out a search party?

Pondering the thought for a moment, Squall felt some of the tension from waiting disappear as a car drove up the ramp and into the Garden parking garage. This late after curfew and with no one else expected, it could only be Laguna and Kiros. Approaching the car as it stopped, Squall frowned when only one door opened.

“Kiros, where is Laguna?" Squall asked as his father’s lover got out of the car. "I thought you were arriving together.”

“Don’t worry, Squall. Laguna is okay.”

“He's okay? Did something happen?” So much for feeling some relief, he thought, willing down the uneasy feeling in his gut. If something did happen it explains their lateness.

“Doesn’t it always where your father is concerned?" Kiros asked with a wry chuckle as he moved to the passenger door. "Could you get the bags out of the back? I’m going to have my hands full.”

Pocketing his phone, Squall moved to the rear door and opened it, reaching in to grab the luggage as Kiros leaned into the front.

“Who is that?” Squall asked, pausing at the sight of a rather intricate hairdo and a body clad in blue silk.

“That’s your father.”

Squall forgot all about what he was doing as he watched Kiros carefully maneuver an unconscious Laguna from the front passenger's seat and into his arms.

“He's in a dress?”

“Yes. He is in a dress. It's a long story so let’s get upstairs. I want to get him settled.”

"Right."

It was rather surreal to follow Kiros and his father to the elevator, Squall choosing the private one that went straight to their level without even really thinking about it. After they got on he realized he didn't even want to contemplate the chances of getting spotted by students up late with training. Maybe learning what had happened wasn't a good idea either seeing as there was a jagged slit in the side of Laguna's dress and he could see a good deal of bare calf that lead down to strappy sandal style shoes that complimented the dress perfectly.

Was that blue nail polish on his father's toes?!

"Ah, Kiros..." Squall started to say just as the doors opened to reveal Irvine.

"Oh hey, was about to go looking for you, Squall. Evenin' Kiros, how are..." Squall could see the moment Irvine's brain caught up with his eyes. "Kiros, how could you?"

"It's dad.," Squall said as he handed over a bag and pushed Irvine ahead, back towards their rooms.

"That's Laguna? Da~mn."

Hyne help me. "Just go open the door, Irvine. Our room is closer so we'll go there first."

As they filed into his and Irvine's rooms, Squall let out a soft sigh of relief that they'd not been spotted by their friends. There were some things they really didn't need to know.

Leaving the bags by the door, he pointed Kiros in the direction of the bedroom so that Laguna could rest comfortably and then followed Irvine into the kitchen. He didn't like the way Irvine kept glancing towards their bedroom, contemplative look in his eyes.

"Hey Squall..." Irvine started, stopped in the doorway, as Squall went to the fridge for some juice.

"No."

"But you don't even..."

"No, Irvine," Squall answered more firmly, not even looking up as Irvine moved over to lean on the side of the fridge.

"Will you just let me..."

"Finish? Answer is still no, Irvine," Squall said, finally standing up, juice in hand. He accepted the glass Irvine held out and held the door open with his hip while he poured. "This is not one of those like father, like son moments. Just because Laguna and Kiros like to...dress up...doesn't mean I'm going to."

"But, you'd be eye catching," Irvine said, giving Squall the appreciative once over with his eyes, "just like your father."

"One more word about it and you'll be sleeping on the sofa."

"What if I don't want to sleep? Does that still mean I have to stay on the sofa?"

"Mind if I grab a drink?"

Squall jumped a little at Kiros' sudden appearance. It grated on his nerves a little that Irvine didn't seem startled at all. Damn man drove him to such distraction.

"Help yourself, Kiros," Squall offered, stepping away from the fridge so Kiros could look. "There's beer if you'd like, some wine in the back too. Or juice. You do know I didn't mean anything bad by the dress up comment?"

"I only found out about it when we went out tonight," Kiros laughed softly as he took the juice.

"Really?" Irvine asked as he handed over a fresh glass. "So what happened?"

"Laguna decided that seeing as we'd be on our way here we should stop off in Deling City for a night at the theater."

"Theater?" Squall asked, wondering why is seemed a familiar idea, one he might have considered recently himself. "Oh."

"Yes," Kiros grinned as he poured a glass and put the juice back in the fridge. Squall just knew they were thinking the same thing. "It was one of those vouchers."

"So this is Selphie's fault?" he asked even as Irvine hissed a so not my fault from nearby.

"No, Laguna was the one to decide to keep them so he can take the blame," Kiros assured them both.

"That doesn't explain the dress."

"Mistaken identity," said as if that explained everything.

"How does one botch up the identity of the president of Esthar?" Squall found himself asking. It wasn't like Esthar was hidden from the world anymore.

"By buying tickets for two over the phone," Kiros answered, smile rueful as he sipped his drink. "Seeing as it was me doing the taking, Laguna gave my name for the tickets. When they arrived, they were for a Mr and Mrs Kiros Seagil."

"And you let them get away with it?" Squall asked, reaching out to smack a trying to laugh quietly Irvine in the back of the head. He ignored the unamused look his boyfriend shot him.

"As I said, I didn't know until tonight when Laguna came out of his room all...dressed up," Kiros admitted and Squall could see in his eyes that he wasn't really in the room with them anymore but viewing the evening in his mind. "Sometimes I forget he's really good at subterfuge," he smiled as he came back to the here and now. "No one we spoke to even realized what was going on. He thought it was a laugh. It was quite nice to not have people falling over themselves just because of who he is."

"That doesn't explain why he's now napping on my bed with my cat," Squall pointed out, glancing towards the door.

"Our bed, our cat."

"Maybe," Squall smirked, glancing out the corner of his eye at a disgruntled looking Irvine.

"Laguna is asleep because fighting in a dress is a bad idea. We ran out of fuel and had to walk about an hour to Deling City. Got a ride back to the car and just as we were about to get in a group of Wendigos showed up. On Laguna's side of the car. He got tangled up in all that fabric and hit his head on the car avoiding a swing. Had to kill them all. After that I healed Laguna, bundled him into the car and drove here."

"That's quite the night," Irvine whistled low, sounding impressed at how presentable both Kiros and Laguna had looked upon arrival.

"Yeah and I'm glad I didn't choose to wear heels."

Squall hid a smile in his juice glass as Laguna wandered in and leaned against Kiros, Kiros' arm automatically moving around Laguna's waist. He looked a bit rumpled from laying down but his eyes showed he was wide awake.

"Hey," Laguna greeted Kiros and Squall frowned at the softness of his voice. Had he strained it?

"Hey," Kiros returned the greeting, pressing a kiss into Laguna's hair.

"Nice toes," Irvine grinned.

"Thanks," Laguna grinned back.

Squall rolled his eyes at them.

"Dad, how are you feeling? Your voice sounds off. Do I need to send for Dr.K?"

"Nah, I'm good," Laguna smiled as he stole the rest of Kiros' juice. "The voice is just part of the costume, speaking softly makes it harder for others to figure out I'm really a guy. I do want to shower and change though" he added, fingering the rip in his dress. "I've heard sleeping in make-up can do horrible things to your skin."

"Only you would be worried about your skin after being attacked by monsters," Kiros chuckled, hugging Laguna closer.

"What?" Laguna blinked up at Kiros, all wide-eyed and innocent looking. Squall was glad not to have those eyes turned on him. "I knew you'd protect me."

"You do damsel in distress very well."

"Least tonight I look the part."

"That you do," Kiros agreed as he smacked Laguna lightly on the bottom and pushed him towards their luggage, picking the larger ones although they obviously belonged to Squall's father. "Grab your bags, Laguna. We will see you in the morning, Squall, Irvine."

Irvine headed through the door first, standing in the hallway as Laguna and Kiros walked to their rooms. It bothered Squall a little that Irvine kept checking out the dress. He knew Irvine wasn't yet ready to let go of the idea of Squall in one.

"Yeah, see you tomorrow," Squall called, smiling a little in return to his father's happy grin, resisting rolling his eyes when Laguna nearly stumbled from not paying attention to where he was going.

Squall's shook his head, bemused as he watched them, Laguna juggling his bags as he got a had free to open the door to their rooms, Kiros pressed against his back to keep him upright. Squall was about to drag Irvine back into their own home and talk to him about his speculative looks when the door across from them opened.

"Thought I heard voices..."

Squall narrowed his eyes at Seifer's questioning look. He couldn't stop Seifer from looking down the hallway, green eyes widening as Laguna finally managed to get the door open and all but fall into the room, a chuckling Kiros in his wake.

"Did I just see...Was that?"

"Not one more word, Seifer." Squall hated that Seifer was immune to his glares. Perhaps threatening with a mission would work.

"Hmmm, I wonder if he'd let me take a photo? Bet it'd be interesting comparing it to ones I have of you."

"Seifer..." Squall growled, tensing as Irvine's interest in Seifer's words became apparent at the surprised indrawn breath.

"Wait." Squall wanted to sigh or step on Irvine's foot or hit Seifer for where this discussion was headed. "You're telling me you have photos of Squall...in a dress?"

"Well yeah, it was part of our training here. There wasn't meant to be any photos taken but for the official ones that are in our files but like that would stop me. I have my methods."

"You gotta show me," Squall heard Irvine plead and he decided he'd had enough.

"Forget it, Irvine," Squall warned, growling softly as he turned and pushed Irvine back into their rooms, ignoring his protests. "Good night, Seifer," he said, giving the blond a hard look over his shoulder. "Do not breathe a word of what you've seen here tonight. That's an order."

"Yeah, whatever you say, Mister Commander," Seifer grinned and gave a lazy salute. "But you might want to tell Selphie that. I'm sure I just saw her door open and close."

There really were days when Squall hated his life.
