So I'm a little spammy today. But I'm going to bed shortly. Here have ficlet sort of thing which ended up longer than it was supposed to *frowns*

Pairing: ? & Cid, with an appearance by Cloud ^^
Part 3 of quite a few ;)
One of the first things Cid had done when renovating the house on the edge of town to be his was install a wood stove. Not that he didn’t trust the power grid of Radiant Garden to provide continuous energy, he just liked the smell of wood smoke and the relaxing repetitiveness of chopping wood.
Cloud had tried it once, claiming that he’d chopped wood for his mother back in Nibelhiem. It had been after one of his first run-ins with Sephiroth, Cloud recovering both mentally and physically and needing a mindless sort of task to do away from Aerith’s concerned mothering. He split two chopping blocks and broke one axe before giving up, frustrated at his body’s strength making simple tasks difficult. Cid set him to gathering the wood he chopped, a safer task, and enjoyed the quiet companionship. Cloud talked when he wanted and Cid learned things that he suspected no one but a certain pain in the ass silver-haired monster knew.
The wood shed was left unlocked for that reason, for somewhere Cloud could get away if he needed and do something calming. He eventually got the hang of his body again and Cid’s axes were safe.
The whirring noise coming from Cid’s woodshed when he arrived home from his Gummi workshop was anything but an axe.
Spear in hand he quietly approached the side wall and crept up to where he could see around the open door as the noise slowed to a stop. He’d built the shed facing away from the town, looking towards a nearby forest. He always thought the forest soothing.
The chainsaw sitting next to the chopping block was not soothing, the machine making loud noises as it sat turned on but not in use.
“Fuck,” Cid muttered softly under his breath, glancing about the empty area.
He didn’t own a chainsaw and Chaos hadn’t been seen for a week.
There was no warning as a hand clamped down on his shoulder and he was spun and pinned against the wall of the shed. The hand closing about his throat was not at all welcome and Cid felt his feet leaving the ground as he was picked up.
Fuck this shit, he thought as he pushed off the wall with his feet, kicking out towards his captor. Dealing with Chaos was one thing as Cid knew Chaos to be intelligent in his own way. Hellmasker was the one he’d had the least contact with, Vincent keeping a very tight hold on this one for some reason. If Cid remembered correctly Hellmasker had a distinct taste for blood which when coupled with the chainsaw meant bloodbath.
It was chilling to not hear any noise coming from Vincent’s monster as Cid’s boot connected hard in its side, the pale mask it wore giving away nothing as they tumbled to the ground and grappled in the dirt. Cid managed to land on top and got in a couple punches before he got a head butt for his actions. Slightly dazed, he was overpowered and Hellmasker rolled them so it was on top. Cid tired to pull at the long black hair as the monster went for his neck, mask pushed up enough to show sharp teeth.
“Argh!” Cid yelled as teeth pierced his skin, bucking up in an attempt to dislodge his attacker.
It took him a moment to realize that he wasn’t being eaten but instead a wet tongue was lapping at the wound on his neck. He loosened his hold on Hellmasker’s hair, absently noting that it was longer than what he remembered Vincent’s to be.
“My blood ain’t all that great, ya know,” Cid murmured, trying not to startle the monster as he fingered the long hair and tried to think calm thoughts. “I drink and I smoke and my diet isn’t the best either. I could…”
Cid shut up as Hellmasker’s head came up quickly, dark red eyes intent on a noise Cid couldn’t quite hear, tongue paused in licking blood covered lips. Not that Cid was paying attention to anything other than the body on top of his.
Vincent?
“Cid, you here?” Cloud’s voice preceded the blond who strolled around the corner of the shed and stopped, drawing his sword so quickly it must’ve been pure reflex.
“Cloud wait.”
Cid let out a yelp as Hellmasker pushed up off him and he rolled to his side in time to see the monster grab the still running chainsaw and dash off into the forest.
“Wait dammit!” Cid called, struggling to sit up, dirt and grass making his neck sting.
There were soft steps on the grass and Cid glared up at Cloud and the gloved hand offered to help him get up.
“I was just coming to tell you,” Cloud said softly, bright eyes scanning the forest for any sign of Vincent’s monster.
“What exactly were you going to tell me?” Cid asked, dusting his clothes off. “That Chaos isn’t the only monster we have on the loose? Fuck Cloud I don’t know if I can handle all of Vincent’s monsters if they come here without warning. I’m only one man.”
“Chaos is gone.”
“What?” Cid asked, feeling he’d been kicked in the gut.
“I came to see you this morning and Chaos was here but he looked confused,” Cloud explained, brow creasing in thought. “Then he transformed right outside your window. I must’ve made some kind of noise because Hellmasker took off like he just did a moment ago into the forest.”
“He looks a lot like Vincent,” Cid said as he began picking up pieces of wood. “Just a bit more crazy and blood thirsty.”
“So I noticed. What was he doing here?”
“Chopping wood I think.”
Cloud’s footsteps stopped and Cid glanced at him, almost smiling at Cloud’s slightly shocked look.
“You’re not serious?” Cloud asked, looking at the chopped pieces of wood littered about rather haphazardly.
“What, you think you’re the only one to come and chop wood with me?” Cid asked as he tossed wood towards the pile of chopped pieces. “Vincent was doing it long before…never mind.”
The hand on Cid’s shoulder this time was gentle, Cloud’s light squeeze reassuring.
“Cid, I think he’s in there. He’s just got all his defenses up. Give it time.”
“Sure,” Cid muttered, voice heavy with sarcasm. “Meanwhile we have a chainsaw wielding madman on the loose near town. Heartless are one thing. Hellmasker will scare everyone and could get himself…and Vincent killed.”
“Aerith knows and will tell everyone to steer clear. Leon is adjusting the town’s computerized defenses so if Hellmasker does wander in he won’t be hurt too badly.”
“And what are you doing?”
“I’m staying here. He doesn’t like something about me so I figure I can keep him away from this side of town.”
“I’m guessing it’s the eyes,” Cid decided as he closed up the shed and headed for the house, a couple bits of wood tucked under his arm. “They are a bit on the bright side when you are overly focused on something. Yuffie watching the other side of town?”
“Yeah.”
“And just where do you plan to sleep? You know I only have the one bed.”
“Yeah, I know that too.”
Pausing as he opened the door, Cid turned and looked at Cloud and frowned. “What are you up to Cloud?”
“Nothing really. Just encouraging Vincent to come back quicker.”
“Right. Then keep your hands to yourself and no biting in the middle of the night,” Cid ordered as he walked into his house. “I’ve had enough for one day.”
“Already eaten.”
“I don’t want to know.”
Cloud’s chuckle followed Cid into the house. It also drifted across the clearing towards the edge of the forest. Neither man heard the soft growl or leather creaking as a hand gripped the handle of a chainsaw tight enough to make it crack.
Cloud worries me. A lot. After I get this one finished I'm going to have to do something about him.
and now that I've spammed the flists today, I am off to shower and then bed.
