"Its a fine ship. The look of a dragon is added bonus but The Highwind or Shera is still far fucking better."
Selphie smirks. "The Ragnarok can travel into space."
Blue eyes blink at her, cigarette dangling precariously from his lower lip. "You win. Now drink your goddamned tea."

The place we landed was hospitable enough. Pristine forests, wild life that had never seen humans before... meaning we were the only ones there. Meaning we were starting from scratch.
It was tough but so were we. Four years later we had snug log cabins, enough food to get us through the winter, and a new beginning.
Squall and I paced outside the cabin in the golden autumn light. Zell perched on a tree stump, putting the finishing touches on some woodworking project of his.
"She'll be fine," Squall murmured as he passed me.
"Of course she will, Quis is tough." But the noises from inside the cabin weren't promising.
"Irv is a good medic and Selphie knows what she's doing," Zell offered, proud of his partners.
We had coupled off, but not as anticipated. Irvine was fascinated by both Selphie and Zell and it turned out they had no objections to sharing. Quistis confessed she'd always had a crush on Squall (we all knew that) and on me (that was news). Squall and I figured out we'd rather fuck than fight, but it helped a lot to have Quis there mediating.
"We know," Squall said politely. I was too distracted to even make a witty comment.
Squall ambled over to admire Zell's creation - a small wooden boat. "Looks good."
"Looks hard to steer," I said.
Zell rolled his eyes. "It's not to float in, it's to rock-"
Just then the sound we'd all been waiting for sang out. We grinned at each other.
Selphie peeked out from the hide covered door. "Ok, daddies, come meet your son."
How about that? Squall and I were fathers.

"Don't even breathe, brat," Reno's voice whispered in his ear.
Breathing wasn't really important, air caught in his throat at the contrast of naked skin on black leather, Tseng looking surprisingly exhausted, vulnerable, at peace where he lay unconscious on top of Rude's equally naked body. Rude was watching him, eyes slitted open at the intrusion of what was obviously private time.
"Don't be like that, partner," Reno crooned softly, amusement in his voice as he draped Rude's jacket over their nakedness. "The kid needed to see this or he'll never get over his crush. It's not like I didn't know where he was."
Rufus felt his face heat as those rarely seen eyes turned their attention to him, measuring his worth in a single glance. Then they closed and Rude turned his head away from them, burying his nose into Tseng's hair, muscled arms curling possessively around Tseng under the jacket.
"Yeah, yeah, we're going," Reno said and nudged his gun hard into Rufus' shoulder to get him moving.
Rufus was staring blankly at the wall opposite as Reno closed the door behind them.
"No one knows this, Rufus, about what we Turks have. Not even yer old man. You got to see because I let you. Don't forget that."
He wanted to be the one allowed to see someone so strong reduced to such a unguarded state, to be deserving of that kind of trust. He would do it. Somehow. Even if he had to kill, he would someday be worthy of the Turks.
"That's the spirit, kid. Now, this is how you take apart a hand gun..."

Zack narrowed his eyes a fraction and gave out a hmphing noise before opening his mouth to retort. Sephiroth beat him to the punch.
"The only thing is, the winner gets to keep coming back. Where does that leave you Fair, when you're sullied by the Lifestream, caught in it's clutches and unable to help those who truly need it? Where does that leave you?"

Cloud smirked, just barely a tilt of the lips. "Never knew you enjoyed bare back Cid."
Shock then a sputtering of swears came out of the older man, cheeks tinted pink while doing so.

I'd run out of places to run, left my posse behind to start a new life of their own without me to fuck it all up for them. Somehow I ended up in Esthar on the wrong end of a Hexadragon's temper and found myself in the hospital recovering just in time for a presidential photo op.
Laguna Loire looked me in the eye, winked and mouthed 'I'll be back later' when no one was looking.
To be honest I'd been just about ready to drop a Cura and drag my ass out of bed but curiosity made me stay. After the press had gone and everything was calm again, Loire came back and pulled the curtains around my bed so we could talk privately.
“I'll be honest with you,” he said. “I know who you are.”
“I know who you are too, sign my cast? Loved The Sorceress' Knight when I was a kid.”
He looked a little taken aback at that, but grinned again and borrowed a pen from a nurse to do just that.
********
He had me moved to the palace to recover. My own protection or something. It was kinda weird how he was the complete opposite to his son in everything, but they still had the same tastes and habits. Only difference was, when Laguna was thinking he'd do it out loud instead of keeping it internal like his son.
Oh Squall came along for visits. The first time he appeared he looked me up and down – I was out of the casts by then – and poked me in the chest hard. “You,” he said in his soft but commanding voice, “look after my father.”
I was confused and wondering where that had come from when Laguna dragged him away.
Squall left just as quickly as he came – he had commandery things to do off at Garden after all. He was kind enough to promise to give my contact details to Fuu and Rai so if they needed me, I could be there for them. They'd been there enough for me in the past, so I figured it was the least I could do.
Laguna invited me into his office and shared a bottle of a Galbadian whiskey with me, and showed me the only picture he had of his wife and himself. He'd aged well, and I was surprised to learn that it'd been taken nearly two decades before.
I was even more surprised when he agreed to watch a movie with me that night to take his mind off stuff.
********
Let's just say the surprise levels didn't drop until well into the next morning, after I woke up with a pounding head, a tongue that had been carpeted in shagpile and the President of Esthar's head pillowed on my chest.
He was adorable with bedhead.
Fortunately, it didn't take much convincing to get him into the shower with me to wash away the cobwebs, the evidence and make some more.
I could get used to being a toy boy.

It was his eyes that gave him away though. I'm not exactly sure how I first noticed the way he stared at me, after all, we were constantly travelling in those days. Looking for material, a solution to the problems walking the earth besides Sephiroth – the damned Weapons weren't near civilisation but every time Ruby patrolled her desert home she came a little closer to the Golden Saucer and killing hundreds, if not thousands of people. I didn't like leaving Emerald down there where we couldn't see it until it was too late either.
So yeah, his eyes gave him away. I knew the closer to limit that Vincent got, the more he watched me. As far as I could tell, the others didn't care or were too busy hurrying me along to the next fight to notice it too. At least I didn't get motion sickness as long as I kept moving around.
It was close to the end that I realised just how tenuous the control Vincent had over his own body was. We were in the Highwind, as always, and I was walking around to keep my mind off the journey, as always.
I didn't see him leaning in the shadows of an alcove until the gold glove – that damn thing was always so cold no matter where we were, I never knew why – caught me by the wrist in an iron grip and hauled me to him. Suddenly I was nose to nose with him, wondering if his eyes had always been so bright a red and just what about me had always said 'victim'.
“Mako,” he growled softly, eyes narrowing as he stared at me. “It's all over you.”
I said nothing, even when his claw tightened on my wrist. I was considering reaching for my sword with my free hand when he pulled his collar down and kissed me.
Always the quiet ones.
I hadn't been kissed like that in a long time. Five years, at least, and when he pulled away my lip was bleeding, I was breathing hard - not to mention I was hard – and he was looking at me like he didn't know what to do next.
I shook out of his grip, took hold of his normal hand and said “Stables.”
He agreed.

His tentative tranquility was shattered by a red head in a rumpled suit. The red head sat an icy tropical drink in front of Squall and slipped into the booth beside him. When Squall refused to move to make room, the red head cuddled. Squall eventually capitulated and huddled against the wall. He took the drink with him, allowing the coolness to sooth Shiva and his own sun dazzled self.
"First, Smiley, I gotta say I like your style. Not a lot of guys wear leather and fur in Costa del Sol. Too afraid of spontaneous combustion."
"Is that where I am?"
The red head looked around. "Probably. I've been drinking a while myself, so who knows?" He sipped his own frosty drink. "So what's your story?"
"Why do I have to have a story?"
"Everyone has a story, Kid. Everyone in a bar before 2 pm, anyhow. So, spill. Tell Uncle Reno all about it."
"Why do you care?"
"I don't, I just want to get into your pants and thought the sympathetic line would help."
Skeptically, Squall said, "Sleep with 'Uncle Reno'? Isn't that a bit incestuous?"
"But doable?"
Squall sipped the drink and felt the coldness revive him. He shrugged. "I have to sleep somewhere."

"Zack!" Cloud protested as he snuck up and slung an arm about Cloud's shoulders, reaching out and grabbing the book being handed over.
"Studying hard I see," Zack grinned as he ruffled Cloud's hair. "Who's your friend?"
Cloud huffed and gave up trying to get out from under Zack's arm and concentrated on holding onto the pile of books in his arms. "That's Squall. He's one of my roomies."
"Nice ass," Zack murmured under his breath, so softly that he was startled when Squall glanced over his shoulder and casually flipped him off.
"Huh? Squall?" Cloud asked and Zack could tell that Cloud hadn't heard Zack's comment, confused by Squall's actions.
"Oh I think I like you," Zack chuckled.
"Whatever," Squall muttered ashe got down off the stool and took half the books, including the one Zack had intercepted. "Cloud, I think we have enough now."
"Okay."
Zack trailed behind them as Cloud and Squall headed for a nearby table already littered with random books and paperwork. He was finding it hard to keep his eyes off Squall's ass, the uniform fitting him just that little bit too well and wasn't surprised to be caught watching.
Squall flipped him off again, this time with an added glare.
As Zack left them to their books and the sound of Cloud both apologizing for Zack's behaviour and scolding Squall for being rude, he found himself heading for Sephiroth's office. A cadet not in awe of SOLDIER was interesting and unafraid to flip one off not once but twice made Zack, curious.
Zack decided he really needed to know who Squall was and where he'd come from.
